Course Description (15027000):  Course usually offered as a series to provide orientation to, and refinement of, the knowledge and skills germane to the healthcare industry.  Topics usually include (but are not limited to) an overview of health care delivery; patient care, including assessment of vital signs, body mechanics, and diet; anatomy and physiology; identification and use of medical equipment and supplies; medical terminology; hygiene and disease prevention; first aid and CPR procedures; laboratory procedures; and ethical and legal responsibilities.  Clinical experiences in local health care settings are integral to the courses.

Course Description(15207000): The study and understanding of medical terminology as it relates to diseases, their causes, and effects, and the terminology used in various medical specialties.  Emphasis is placed on learning the basic element of medical words, appropriate spelling and use of medical terms, and use of medical abbreviations related to anatomy & physiology.

Anatomy & Physiology

Course Description:  An advanced second year Biology course designed for students planning a career in Life Science, Health or Medical Fields.  Students will investigate topics in greater detail and become familiar with newer techniques in Biology used to study human genetics and cells at molecular level along with review of basic biological concepts related to health sciences.   Course will cover Fundamentals of Anatomy and Human Physiology in order to prepare to meet requirements for CNA Programs. Students will develop reading, writing and presentation skills to increase their awareness of current research through assigned health and   medical science readings on specific issues impacting human health and medical care. 

1 year, 1 credit in lab, Life Science. Grade 11, 12 

Prerequisite: Completion of Physical Science, Biology first year with at least a C, & Algebra I. (Algebra II/Geometry preferred)

Emergency Medical Technician

Course Description: Course covers the same scope of topics as Health Care Occupations courses, but this course places a special emphasis on the knowledge and skills needed in medical emergency situations. Topics may include methods for lifting and transporting injured persons, controlling bleeding, stabilizing fractures, clearing airway obstructions, and responding to cardiac arrest.

Sports Medicine

Course Description: This course is a study and analysis of injuries commonly associated with athletes. The course explores the roles of the athletic trainer, physician and coach as they relate to the physiological and psychological welfare of the athlete. The lab portion of the class is integrated.
