Concert/Marching Band

TWO YEARS OF MARCHING BAND FOR ONE YEAR OF PE CREDIT

Course Description: A two part course.  In the fall the band will be a marching band.  The students will learn the fundamentals of marching.  Emphasis will also be placed on the fundamentals of music. Such as reading music, rhythm exercises, sight reading, and personal practice habits. The band will perform at all home football games, prepare a halftime show, participate in regional marching competitions, and participate in community events as asked.

In late fall, the focus of the band will change to concert band. The band will prepare and perform a winter concert. Emphasis will continue to be placed on the fundamentals of music. Students will be expected to learn all major scales, counting and rhythm exercises, sight reading, and good individual practice habits. In addition to the Christmas Concert, the band will present concerts in March and May. The band will also audition for and participate in regional and all-state honor bands.  Students will also be encouraged to participate in the regional Solo and Ensemble festival. Attendance at all performances is required.

JAZZ BAND

Course Description: This course is designed for students interested in careers in instrumental music and students who are planning to participate in a college music program. The course will focus on the many styles of jazz and a major emphasis will be placed on improvisation. The band will participate in at least one concert each grading period, perform at community events as invited, and participate in regional and state music festivals.  Attendance at all performances is required. 

1 year, 1 elective credit.  Grades 9,10,11,12.  Honors Credit awarded.

Prerequisite: Membership in the high school band.  Instructor’s permission.

CHOIR I, II, III, IV

Course Description: The Choral program offers students of varying levels of interest and talent the opportunity to participate in Mixed Chorus through large and small ensembles and solo activities. Students are encouraged to develop their own musical ability. Various styles of choral music are studied and performed. Student’s vocal techniques and musicianship are developed. The Chorus performs at least one concert each grading period, at community events as invited, and at regional and state music festivals. Attendance at all performances is required. 

1 year, 1 elective  credit.  Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

COLLEGE MUSIC THEORY

Course Description: This is a college level class, the curriculum is from 1st year Music Theory classes taught at New Mexico colleges. The purpose of this course is to present the basic ingredients of the art of music, so that structure, design, and language are made clear and accessible to the student. Students will examine an array of tonal configurations found in music literature. Topics covered will include Analysis skills, Historical Perspective, Compositional Skills, A Seeing Ear, A Hearing Ear, and Performance.  Students should be prepared for the rigor of a college level course. Enrollment in this course is limited to juniors and seniors. 

1 year, 1 elective credit.  Grades 11, 12

Prerequisite: Instructor’s permission. Two years participation in high school band or choir. The ability to read music prior to enrollment is a must.

MUSIC/THEATER TECHNOLOGY

Course Description:  Theater Technology is an introductory course that exposes students to basic broadcasting music/theater technology concepts using the MIDI, Digital Audio and Multimedia applications.  We will also cover Theater Operation Management, Event Planning and Production, and YouTube Broadcasting. This class includes a paid internship. Attendance at all performances is required.  This class includes a paid internship for activities outside of the school day.
