Lady Pirates in the huddle.

GRANTS - On Tuesday the Grants Pirates basketball teams opened up their season with Bloomfield and ended with mixed results.

On Tuesday, November 28, Pirates boys hit the road to play the Bobcats and came away with their first win of the season. The Pirates and Bobcats were tied at the half, but Grants turned up the pressure and ended up winning by 16, 61-45.

The Pirates had four players in double digits, including Tristan Fernandez and Boudy Melonas, who each pitched in 14 points, and Izaiah Griego and Matthew Trujillo each with 11.

Back at home, the Lady Pirates unfortunately lost to Bloomfield 47-30. Grants trailed only 13-7 after the first quarter, but the Bobcats, a State quarterfinal team from a year ago, eventually outlasted the Lady Pirates.

The Lady Pirates will take on the Hobbs Eagles on December 7 at home. The Pirates were slated to play Capital at home on Tuesday, but the game was postponed because of the weather.

Stay tuned for more from the GHS basketball teams.
