Starting today, your Grants Pirates will hold a Holiday tourney, with the both Pirates and Lady Pirates competing. The boys’ version is titled the “Eddie Pena Classic,” while the girls’ version is titled the “Robert Dailey Tournament,” with both names referring to longtime Pirate basketball fans.
The tourney will last through Saturday, and all games will be taking place at the Grants High School gymnasium.
There will be four different teams in the tournament, including the Grants teams; other participating teams include Laguna-Acoma, Magdalena and Socorro.
The first game to start off the Tourney will be the L-A Lady Hawks taking on Magdalena at 2:30 p.m. today. Then, at 4 p.m. the Hawk boys will take on the Steers. The Grants girls’ team will take on Socorro at 5:30, and to wrap up the first day of the tourney, the Pirate boys will take on the Warriors at 7 p.m.
On Friday, December 22, the second day of the Tournament, things start at 2:30 p.m. as the Lady Steers of Magdalena take on the Lady Warriors. At 4 p.m. the Steers will take on the Warriors, while at 5:30 the Lady Pirates will take on the Lady Hawks. The fifth-ranked Pirate boys finally wrap up the second day with a contest against the Hawks at 7 p.m.
Saturday’s action kicks off with the Lady Warriors taking on the Lady Hawks at 10 a.m. followed by an 11:30 game featuring the Warriors and the Hawks. At 1 p.m. the Lady Pirates will take on the Lady Steers, and to wrap up the tourney, the Pirates will take on the Steers at 2:30, in what might be the marquee matchup of the entire tournament.
The way the winning team will be determined for both boys and girls is by a team’s win/loss record and then by a point differential. There will be first and second place trophies for both boys and girls, two All-tourney selections for each team and one MVP for both boys and girls.
Admission of $5.00 per day, per person, and the Grants gym is a cashless venue.
