GRANTS - On Friday, August 23, the Pirates took on the Miyamura Patriots at home in what was billed as a tough matchup.
It was the Patriots’ season-opener but the Pirates came away with the win, 34-20.
A part of that big win was GHS quarterback Tristan Fernandez, who threw for 135 yards on 7 of 14 passing and three touchdowns. Also, running back Andres Lazos got 12 touches for 100 yards for an average of eight-plus yards per carry. On the defensive side, Juaquine Rivera ended the night with eight tackles and two sacks, while Fernandez and Gary Chavez also pitched in eight tackles.
The Pirates will be in action today, as they are headed to Albuquerque's Milne Stadium to take on the St. Pius Sartans in what looks like a rough matchup. The Sartans are 0-1 on the season as they have lost to the West Mesa Mustangs, 48-29. The Mustangs are unofficially number 12 in the latest 6A football coaches poll.
Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
