Grants High School is proud to announce that four Grants Pirate Football players have officially committed to continue their academic and athletic careers at the collegiate level. These student-athletes represent the dedication, discipline, and character that define the Pirate football program.
Gary Chavez will attend New Mexico Highlands University, an NCAA Division II institution. A true utility player, Chavez contributed at multiple positions including multiple spots across the defensive, and offensive line, embodying the toughness and team-first mentality of Pirate football.

Deandre Chavez has committed to Arizona Christian University, an NAIA institution. A dynamic and versatile athlete, Chavez made major contributions on both sides of the ball as a quarterback and cornerback, demonstrating leadership, athleticism, and football intelligence throughout his career.

Cardenio Chavez will continue his football journey at Bemidji State University, competing at the NCAA Division II level. As a standout cornerback, Chavez was known for his defensive instincts, coverage ability, and consistent presence in the Pirates’ secondary.

Isaiah Ortega has committed to Bethany College, an NAIA program. Ortega played a key role for the Pirates as a wide receiver and safety, showcasing speed, toughness, and versatility as a dependable two-way contributor.

Head Coach Steve Brown praised the group not only for their athletic success, but for the example they have set within the program.
“I am extremely proud of these young men. Their commitment to excellence shines through more than their accomplishments on the field. Each of these guys are great young men of character,” Brown said. “More than anything, I am so excited for their futures and the example they set for our younger players. They have shown that even those from a small town and small program can achieve greatness and successfully attain their dreams. I can’t wait to see how they each progress in their future. Once a Pirate, Always a Pirate! GO PIRATES! GO ANGRY JACK!”
Grants High School and the Pirate community congratulate Deandre, Cardenio, Isaiah, and Gary on their accomplishments and wish them continued success as they represent Pirate football at the collegiate level.
