Antonio Torivio goes up for two

GRANTS - The Grants Pirates are ready and set for the State Tourney as they will take the No. 8 seed into the State Tournament. The Pirates will face the No.9 seed Silver at 4 p.m. in “The Port,” on Saturday, March 9.

The Fighting Colts are on a hot, eight-game winning streak. They finished off the regular season 18-8 and also won their District, as they swept their District opponents 6-0.

Unfortunately the Pirates lost in the second round of their District Tournament to their District rival the St. Pius Sartans. The Pirates have not yet taken on the Fighting Colts this year, but this will be challenging for both teams since they will be meeting for the first time.

GHS Coach Landon Chavez said “Ultimately, we don't have a whole lot of height,” in reference to the Colts, who have several players above six feet tall. “I think when you get to this point you have to just go with what got you there.”

Also the Pirates’ shooting guard Boudy Melonas said “We are treating it as a normal home game.”

If the Pirates can pull off the victory, they would next play in “The Pit,” possibly against top seed Highland, a team that the Pirates are familiar with. The Pirates haven’t played in “The Pit,” since the 2015-2016 season.

Please visit the Grants High School Facebook and Instagram pages on Saturday for coverage from the Pirates’ home State Tournament game.
