GRANTS - The Grants Pirates football team was back in action on October 19, set to take on the Moriarty Pintos in the Pirates’ homecoming game. The Pirates came away with a win over the Pintos 19-6, following a rain and lightning delay late in the third quarter.
Pirates’ running back Andres Lazos had himself a day as he had 16 carries for 111 yards, translating to 6.9 yards per carry and two touchdowns. On the defensive side of the ball Cardenio Chavez finished the night off with 10 solo tackles, and Juaquine Rivera and Joe Clawson finished off with a sack apiece.
The Pirates (5-3 overall, 3-1 District) are so far ranked number three in their District, behind Bloomfield (No. 1) and Bernalillo, and they are also on a four-game winning streak heading into their game against the Bernalillo Spartans. The Pirates will be in action on Friday, October 25 on the road to take on the Spartans in what should be a tough matchup.
Coach Steve Brown said that stopping the Spartans’ passing game would be key for the Pirates. He added that he was pleased with the Grants offense in recent weeks, and felt confident that the Pirates will once again be able to grind out plenty of yardage.
A Pirate win over Bernalillo would set up a huge matchup with Bloomfield, which visits Grants on November 1.
Game time set for 6 p.m.
